Overview

Flat Products for Fabrication, Pressure & Wear

Sheets and plates are flat-rolled products used for fabricated equipment, vessels, tanks, structures, liners and machined components. They are chosen by grade (corrosion, temperature or wear resistance), thickness and size, and – for stainless in particular – by surface finish, which affects both appearance and cleanability.

We supply hot and cold rolled material from stock and to order, cut to your dimensions: full sheets, plates, coils, strips, circles and profile-cut blanks, with mill test certificates traceable to the heat number.

Hot Rolled, Cold Rolled & Specials

The rolling route decides the thickness range, tolerances and the finish you can achieve.

HR

Hot Rolled Plate

Rolled above the recrystallisation temperature, then annealed and pickled. Economical for heavy sections, with a matte No.1 surface and wider thickness tolerances.

  • Thickness about 3 mm to 120 mm and above
  • Finish No.1 (hot rolled, annealed, pickled)
  • Best for vessels, tanks, structures, machining, liners
CR

Cold Rolled Sheet

Reduced at room temperature and annealed, giving closer thickness tolerances, better flatness and a smoother, brighter surface suitable for polishing.

  • Thickness about 0.3 mm to 6 mm
  • Finish 2B, BA, No.4, HL, mirror
  • Best for panels, equipment, hygienic and decorative work
COIL

Coils & Slit Strips

Supplied in coil form for continuous processing, or slit to the exact width you need for pressing, roll forming and component manufacture.

  • Thickness 0.3 mm to 6 mm
  • Width slit from 10 mm upwards
  • Best for press shops, tube mills, component makers
SPL

Chequered, Perforated & Circles

Patterned plate for anti-slip flooring, perforated sheet for screens and guards, and circles or blanks cut for pressing, dished ends and flange facings.

  • Chequered diamond / tear-drop pattern
  • Circles cut to diameter from sheet or plate
  • Best for platforms, stairs, utensils, dished ends
Surface Finishes

Finishes Explained – No.1 to Mirror

Finish affects appearance, cleanability and corrosion behaviour. Designations follow ASTM A480 / EN 10088-2.

No.1 1D / hot rolled

Hot rolled, annealed and pickled. Dull, matte and slightly rough – the standard finish for plate.

Vessels, tanks, structural, high-temperature work

2D cold rolled, dull

Cold rolled, annealed and pickled. Uniform matte grey with good paint and coating adhesion; suits deep drawing.

Pressings, deep-drawn parts, painted work

2B cold rolled, bright

2D followed by a light skin pass on polished rolls – smooth, semi-reflective. The most common general-purpose sheet finish.

General fabrication, equipment, chemical plant

BA 2R / bright annealed

Bright annealed in a controlled atmosphere, so no scale forms – highly reflective, smooth and easy to clean.

Architectural, pharma, hygienic, decorative

No.4 satin / brushed

Uniform directional abrasive finish, typically 150–180 grit. Hides fingerprints and scratches better than bright finishes.

Kitchens, dairy, food equipment, lifts, façades

HL hairline

Long, continuous fine brush lines running the length of the sheet – popular for architectural cladding and lift panels.

Cladding, elevators, signage, interiors

No.8 mirror

Progressively polished and buffed to a reflective, almost image-clear surface with no visible grit lines.

Decorative panels, columns, display, reflectors

Chequered patterned

Raised diamond or tear-drop pattern rolled into the surface for grip underfoot, in stainless, carbon steel and aluminium.

Walkways, stair treads, platforms, vehicle bodies

PVC film protection is applied on polished and mirror material to prevent handling marks. Other finishes – electropolished, embossed, etched, coloured PVD – can be arranged on request.

Manufacturing

From Slab to Finished Sheet

How flat products are made – and why the route determines thickness, tolerance and finish.

  1. 01

    Melting & Slab Casting

Steel is melted and refined (AOD / VOD for stainless) and continuously cast into slabs. Each melt carries a heat number that stays with the material to delivery.

  2. 02

    Hot Rolling

The reheated slab is rolled down to plate or hot band on a reversing or Steckel mill, controlling temperature to develop the required structure.

  3. 03

    Annealing & Pickling

Solution annealing (typically 1040–1120 °C for austenitic grades) followed by quenching, then pickling to remove scale and restore the passive layer – producing the No.1 finish.

  4. 04

    Cold Rolling & Skin Pass

Cold reduction on a Sendzimir or tandem mill gives closer tolerance and better flatness; a light skin pass on polished rolls produces the 2B surface, or bright annealing produces BA.

  5. 05

    Levelling & Polishing

Roller levelling corrects flatness; abrasive belts produce No.4, hairline or mirror finishes, with PVC film applied to protect the surface.

  6. 06

    Cutting, Inspection & Packing

Material is cut to size, inspected for dimensions, flatness and surface, marked with grade and heat number, then packed for dispatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a sheet and a plate?

It is a matter of thickness and width. Under ASTM A480, stainless material under 4.76 mm (3/16") thick and 600 mm or wider is a sheet; 4.76 mm and over, wider than 250 mm, is a plate. Narrow, thin material is strip. Sheets are usually cold rolled with a bright finish; plates are usually hot rolled with a No.1 finish.

Which finish should I choose – 2B, BA or No.4?

2B is the general-purpose cold rolled finish: smooth, semi-reflective and economical. BA (bright annealed) is more reflective and easier to clean, used in pharma, hygienic and decorative work. No.4 is a brushed satin finish that hides fingerprints and scratches, widely used for kitchen, dairy and architectural surfaces.

Can you cut plates to my sizes?

Yes. We supply cut-to-size plates, circles, rings and profile-cut blanks, from a single piece upwards. Send your cutting list or drawing – supplying material ready to use saves you handling, scrap and machine time.

Do you supply boiler quality and wear-resistant plate?

Yes – SA 516 Gr. 60/70 and SA 387 for boilers and pressure vessels, and 400/500 HBW class abrasion-resistant plate such as Hardox for liners, buckets and chutes, along with SAILMA high-tensile structural plate.

Is ultrasonic testing available on plates?

Yes. Straight-beam ultrasonic examination to ASTM A578 (or A435) can be arranged for pressure-vessel and heavy-plate applications, with the report supplied alongside the mill test certificate.

How do I work out the weight of a plate?

Weight per square metre equals thickness in mm × density (7.85 for carbon steel, 7.93 for SS 304, 2.70 for aluminium). Multiply by the area in m². For example, a 2000 × 1000 × 10 mm SS 304 plate weighs 2 m² × 79.3 = 158.6 kg. Our weight calculator does this for any material.
